CASA self-study vs Part 147 training
CASA self-study or Part 147?Choose the support you need.
Sigma’s Part 147 RPL and gap pathway is supported self-study: flexible learning with a mapped plan, trainer contact and evidence feedback. Compare it with organising the CASA self-study route independently.

Study independently. Or put a team behind your study.
Self-paced study. A training team behind you.
Study around your roster, with a mapped plan, trainer contact and feedback on the work. That is what we mean by supported self-study.
- A plan for your gaps
- Help when you get stuck
- Evidence checked along the way
| What changes | Independent pathwayCASA self-studyYou manage the study and evidence. | Supported self-studyPart 147 with SigmaYour RPL and gap plan. Our training support. |
|---|---|---|
| 01Assessment support | You organise the learning. Choose resources, prepare for exams and work out how to demonstrate the required experience. | A mapped plan and a trainer to ask. Sigma reviews prior learning, sets the gaps and provides learning resources, assessment support and feedback. |
| 02VET outcomes | A licensing pathway only. CASA self-study does not itself award an Australian VET qualification. That needs separate RTO assessment. | Competency records you can use. Achieved units can lead to a Statement of Attainment. A full qualification needs all of its assessment and packaging requirements. |
| 03Exam provider & conditions | Aspeq basic-knowledge exams. Book designated exam venues and meet the published sitting and resit conditions. You organise your preparation. | Exams within your training plan. Sigma arranges the relevant MTO exams. Approved online invigilation is available subject to eligibility, identity, environment and exam rules. |
| 04Practical evidence | You manage the logbook and evidence. Arrange suitable tasks, sign-offs and the correctly completed CASA practical-experience logbook for your application. | Get feedback before the final application. You provide authentic workplace evidence. Sigma reviews it, explains what is missing and helps you address the gaps. |
| 05Cost components | Separate costs to organise. Allow for materials, exams and resits, travel, time away from work, evidence preparation and CASA application fees. | A defined package for your gaps. Confirm RPL, training, assessment, exams and materials in the quote, plus any resits, workplace arrangements and regulator fees. |
| 06Who it suits | Confident independent learners. You have time to manage the syllabus, practical tasks, evidence and application with limited individual training support. | Busy engineers who want support. A clear next task, feedback and someone to contact help keep progress moving around shifts, family and work. |
CASA and Aspeq publish guidance and provide regulatory or exam services; the independent route does not include Sigma’s individual training support. Both routes can support modular or full-category outcomes. Your evidence must be genuine, and all applicable licensing requirements still have to be met.

Already started on your own?
Many engineers who begin with independent CASA self-study come to Sigma for support. Bring what you have completed: we assess it and explain the remaining gaps. Clear answers and early feedback can help you reach an outcome sooner and prepare for your next responsibility or pay tier. Completion time, licence decisions and promotion depend on your circumstances and employer.
A separate decision
Choose the support. Then choose the scope.
Training route and licence scope are separate choices. Both independent CASA self-study and supported Part 147 training can lead to modular or full-category outcomes, subject to the applicable requirements.
Selected systems
Modular licence
Build certification privileges for a defined set of systems, with exclusions recording the limits.
Broader coverage
Full-category licence
Complete the knowledge, competency and experience requirements across the chosen category or subcategory.

Compare the complete commitment
The fee is one part.
Your time matters too.
Ask for a mapped scope and a written breakdown. A lower initial fee does not necessarily mean a lower total cost.
- Training: materials, RPL, gap learning and assessment.
- Exams: first sittings, resits and travel arrangements.
- Workplace: suitable tasks, supervision and time away from work.
- Application: evidence preparation and CASA charges.
Time spent chasing an unclear requirement or correcting evidence also matters. Sigma confirms the package and inclusions after reviewing your starting point.
