How people actually enter aircraft maintenance

Aircraft maintenance is safety-critical. Before investing in an apprentice, employers look for evidence that a new starter is reliable, follows instructions, uses PPE, controls tools and parts, reports mistakes and stops to ask rather than guessing.

Trade assistant, stores, workshop support, component support and hangar support roles are legitimate entry points. They allow an employer to observe how you behave around real maintenance.

• Entry-level does not mean unimportant.
• Small behaviours are strong trust signals.
• A support role can build the credibility that leads to an apprenticeship.

Choose the work environments you want to explore

There is no single aircraft maintenance job. Line maintenance, base maintenance, General Aviation, rotary-wing operations and component workshops have different tempos, aircraft, tooling and task mixes. These answers record preferences, not competence, and it is acceptable to be undecided.

• Line maintenance: aircraft turnarounds, scheduled and unscheduled operational work.
• Base or heavy maintenance: deeper inspections, larger work packs and coordinated teams.
• General Aviation: smaller fleets and aircraft, often with broad practical exposure.
• Component or engine workshops: inspection, repair and overhaul away from the whole aircraft.
• Rotary wing: helicopters used in emergency response, utility, tourism, offshore and other operations.

Streams, licences and type ratings: a plain-English orientation

Entry-level work is supervised. An apprentice or working AME builds MEA Aeroskills competencies and documented practical experience. A CASA Part 66 licence pathway then depends on the category, required knowledge and competency, and relevant practical experience.

• B1.1: turbine aeroplanes
• B1.2: piston aeroplanes
• B1.3: turbine helicopters
• B1.4: piston helicopters
• B2: avionics, electrical, instrument and radio systems

For type-rated aircraft, an appropriately licensed engineer also needs the relevant aircraft type training and rating before exercising certification privileges on that type.

Licensing advice must be confirmed for the individual, qualification and aircraft environment.

Evidence beats adjectives

You can demonstrate potential without aircraft experience. A factual example of safe tool use, measurement, assembly, fault-finding, housekeeping or following a drawing is stronger than simply saying you are practical.

Evidence can come from school workshops, work, VET, hobbies, vehicles, bicycles, electronics, model-making, farm work, sport equipment, volunteering or home projects. State what you did, the instruction or standard you followed, how you checked the result and the level of supervision.

Safety-critical judgement

Aircraft maintenance does not reward confident guessing. Employers want a new starter who follows approved data, asks when unsure, reports errors and protects the aircraft, the team and the tool-control system.

• If unsure: stop, check the procedure or manual, and ask the supervisor or LAME.
• If you make an error: stop, protect the work and report it early.
• If a tool or part cannot be accounted for: raise it immediately and follow the organisation procedure.

Reliability and practical availability

Maintenance work is concentrated around airports, regional bases, MRO facilities and operational rosters. Shift work, weekends, early starts, security passes and strict drug and alcohol requirements are common. Employers need a clear answer about what you can actually commit to.

A constraint does not automatically rule you out. An honest, stable answer is more useful than an unclear commitment.

Build evidence an interviewer can test

Junior interviews usually assess attitude, honesty, safety awareness and coachability. Prepare short examples using Situation, Task, Action and Result.

• Reliability: when people depended on you to turn up and deliver.
• Teamwork: when you listened, communicated and contributed.
• Safety or procedure: when you followed a standard, stopped, checked or raised a concern.

Translate your history; do not dismiss it

Retail, hospitality, warehousing, agriculture, construction, sport and volunteering can show shift reliability, stock control, teamwork, documentation, physical stamina and process discipline. Describe the behaviour accurately rather than trying to make it sound like aircraft experience.

• Use action, context, standard and result.
• Include supervised training and workshop exposure.
• Ask referees first and tell them what kind of role you are seeking.

• Use 4-6 credible practical or training bullet points.

• Never imply that supervised training made you licensed or authorised to certify maintenance.
